Today I had an experience with a Improvement Warrior Fitness trial client at our Hilliard studio that I seem to be having all too often lately. And I will probably have that experience again in the future.
This person talked about how they are ready for change, and what they are going to do to start moving their life forward in a positive way.
Then the first day came and their first workout. They made it through ok, there was nothing I could see that would indicate that this person wasn’t dedicated to the program. Some of the exercises seemed even easy for them.
Then the day for their second workout came and went. Without them……..
They were MIA.
Then the third and fourth workouts came and went and this person still hadn’t returned.
I made a quick call to them: The trial member answered the phone ‘This is so and so,”
Me: ‘ So and so this is Jason, Improvement Warrior Fitness. How are you?!’
So and so: ‘ Sorry Jason, I’m in a work meeting. I’ll call you back later’
And guess what—- there was no call back later.
What happend to those goals we had talked through just a few days earlier?
Did you review those goals? Did you make one change that was recommended?
99% chance they did not!
Because we, as a human race, are designed to be a goal striving mechanism. We set the goal, and we go after it.
But at the first sign of trouble– workout too hard first day we tend to make excuses, and then continue with more and more excuses. We head in the wrong direction.
Change is hard.
I want you to understand, if you go into something with the same mindset that you’ve always had then you are going to see the same results you’ve always gotten before. We need to progress the mind and the mindset before we can progress with anything else.
When you start something new, or re-start something after a while away (aka fitness), you are a beginner.
And beginners typically are somewhere between Sh*t to Suck, which is okay, we all have to start somewhere.
Dave Tate, a world renown Powerlifter, describes the levels of progress towards a goal as:
To go from Sh*t to Elite requires a dramatic Mindset shift. But that is why no one can make that jump in any field. It takes weeks, months, and years to move to Elite. That’s why so few ever reach Elite status in anything.
I’d put the trial member at the Average level in terms of their performance in the first workout. But the thing is, what they were doing before (nothing) was a hell of a lot easier then what we do in our group training.
In order to change your life something in your life needs to change. You need to add positive habits, like working out and nutrition, and eliminate or decrease the negative habits, like watching too much tv or eating junk food at night.
But some people simply are unable to make the switch. They simply keep going in their comfortable ways. They don’t really achieve anything, and they keep making excuses as to why.
It takes just as much energy to progress as it does to regress (remember you cannot remain the same— EVER.) Because to come up with the excuses takes energy, but it’s the wrong type of energy– it’s negative energy.
Negative energy keeps you in a rut; you keep accomplishing things but it’s the wrong thing, it keeps you in the average or below category. Why would anybody want to simply be average?

You are the results of each of your actions. Every single one of your actions has led you to where you are right now…… but the thing is you can decide where you go from here.
Either moving towards Good, Great, or Elite. Or staying average and moving down to suck, or sh*t.
There are certain things everybody says you should do to build a great life…….. nutrition and fitness are two of those………. but positive actions build upon each other to help move you forward. There is no shortcuts to building an Elite life. It takes hours and hours and hours (years of hours and hours of practice).
