• Are you afraid of fat? [project: Dream Body- Part 2]

Reason #2 for not getting the results you want in terms of your body, and fitness is fear of fat.

Please keep in mind these reasons are in no particular order. They are just as they come up in my mind. They are all important. And I have no idea how long this list is going to get.

But fear fat is a big one in terms of nutrition. And it is just one that I had to greatly overcome.

I grew up in the heyday of the Low Fat, High Carb craze. I used to be so proud of my diet being less then 10% of my total calories from fat, and less then 10% of that fat coming from the dreaded, evil saturated fat.

Thinking about it makes me want to go back and knock some serious sense into the younger me. But I try to limit my reminiscing because I know that every action I took and didn’t took has led me to who I am today. I really would not change anything, because I love my life and I know where I am going (another reason coming soon).

Sometimes my fat intake would be as low as 1.9% for up to 3000-3500 calories. Yes, I took it to the extremes. And I’m confident it lead to my early hair loss. Started losing it when I was 20. But no regrets, being bald is awesome.

yun fitness training for weight loss and changing your lifeI don’t worry about rain, wind, sleep— everywhere I go I know exactly what it looks like 🙂

    Now back to fat.

The reason the fear of fat started was back in the 70’s. This was when they discovered LDL cholesterol, and then hypothesized that fat raises LDL and that high LDL is related to heart disease.

This lead to the big 3, American Heart Association and Diabetes, and USDA all recommending that we lower our intake of fat. Lower fat has to get replaced by something— carbs and sugar.

Now this reason is going to be fat and cholesterol. Because both are good and both are usually lumped together.

There is no such thing as just bad LDL or just good HDL cholesterol. There is good and bad of both. It all comes down to the particles of each. Knowing your total cholesterol or your overall LDL and HDL is not good enough. You have to know the particles for each type. They have tests for it now. But if you are worried about heart disease now or will in the future know this—— there has never been one single study in the history of time that has connected high cholesterol to coronary heart disease.

Not one! It’s all been one of the biggest lies in government and nutrition history.

Now if you are at risk for heart disease, or want to know- the best indicator is Triglycerides to HDL ratio.

What really does raise cholesterol is carbs and sugar (more in another article).

Cholesterol is your friend. Without it you would die. Low cholesterol is one of the best indicators for impedance. It is a precursor for testosterone, estrogen, vitamin D. It fights off inflammation and oxidation. Helps with digestion of the fat soluble vitamins. It’s used to fight infections.

1/5 of your brain weight is cholesterol. Your brain depends on it. Without it you are dumber. Memory is impaired.

If you don’t eat it your body will make it. Every single cell has a way to produce it.

The people with the lowest cholesterol have the greatest chance to die from all causes.

Now with cholesterol usually comes saturated fat. This is the fat that has been demonized more then any other fat. Your told to eat the healthy fats- Mono and Poly- Unsaturated.

But saturated fat is the healthiest and most needed by the body. Every cell requires saturated fat. Bones need it to put calcium in the bones and not your arteries. It raises the good HDL (HDL-2) and LDL (LDL-A).

Your body actually prefers fat to run on for fuel which is known as ketones or ketone bodies. Obviously we have been trainined and fooled to believe that we need to consume carbs all day long to have energy which is known as glucose or the stored form is glycogen.

This is another one of the greatest cons played on you and me. Constantly consuming carbs and sugar is the main reason we are in an obesity epidemic. (More—much more on carbs in a future reason).

So eat fat. It will fill you up. When you are constantly eating carbs you need to eat every 3-4 hours because you will be starving. something that I preached for years. It is protein sparring so you don’t need to eat as much protein.

Eat cholesterol— your brain and body will thank you. If you don’t your brain will actually ‘dry up’.

If you are taking or know someone taking a statin drug (cholesterol lowering drug), please share this with them. I did an entire presentation on cholesterol, saturated fat and statins here. You can watch it.
